TEACHING EXPERIENCE

Kumu Hula of Halau Hula Ka Pio O Ke Ānuenue, 2007 - present

Guide and oversee the activities of this hula halau (school of traditional dance from Hawai’i); schedule and supervise all events and programs. Teach beginning through advanced hula classes for women, children/youth, and men with a focus on Hawaiian values and culture. Instruction includes kahiko (ancient style) and ‘auana (modern style) technique and repertory, involving rhythm and interpretive movement. Choreograph kahiko and ‘auana hula dances; compose mele (songs) and serve as ho’opa’a (chanter). Produce public performances including design of sets, lighting, costumes, and other artistic elements of production; coordinate production music with music directors and musicians; direct and stage dance presentations for students at various venues; dance at public and private events. Provide advance training for senior students, including instruction in teaching others. Maintain relationships with peers and respected Kumu Hula. Execute administrative tasks, including email marketing, print advertising, press releases and other publicity for classes and events; perform bookkeeping; maintain communications with students.

Taught beginning and intermediate Bharata Natyam (Indian Classical Dance) classes and workshops for children and adults.  Instruction included theory, technique, traditional and contemporary repertory, as well as information about the culture and customs of India.  Produced and directed student performances.  Directed and taught interdisciplinary, residential camp programs (yoga, art, music, and dance intensives).

Founder/President Kapi'oanuenue, a nonprofit organization 501(c)(3) founded in 2011
The mission of Kapi'oanuenue is to actively participate in the promotion, perpetuation, and preservation of the wisdom and knowledge of the Hawaiian culture and its traditional practices. Kapi'oanuenue serves as the funding arm for the hula school Ka Pi'o O Ke Anuenue. Duties as President include monitoring the organization’s operations; setting the agenda for and presiding at all Board meetings; appointing committee members and overseeing committee activities as needed; serving as the liaison and public interface for the organization; advocating for the organization’s goals; helping set the organization’s programs and services; coordinating volunteer activities and fundraising initiatives; writing grants.
